My Photoshoot Experience
I recently experienced a photoshoot in my own studio. Ironically, I had never had a professional photoshoot before. A good friend and fellow professional photographer, Dawn, thought it might be a good idea if I experienced one in my studio. Instead of using every excuse in the book ... “I look fat” ... “my hair’s a mess” ... “I’m not pretty enough to be photographed” ... I decided to embrace it, and I’m glad I did. It was good to be on the other side of the camera and experience first hand what my clients experience.
At first, I just stood there in front of my black backdrop feeling a little awkward as Dawn adjusted her camera settings. Not sure what to do with my hands, how to stand …”do I look like a dork just standing here?” Then Dawn was ready and began snapping away. I know what poses I direct my clients to do, but it’s really not the same, trying to direct myself and not really knowing if I’m doing them correctly. It was nice to have someone on the other side who could professionally direct me ... get the hair out of my face and straighten my jacket (which I clearly didn’t know was a mess). After a few clicks, I started to have fun. I goofed around a little bit and then started getting into it. This was all about ME! I mean, all the attention was on me and that attention was positive. With every click, Dawn would look and say things like “Omg, I love this!” or “You look so good in this one.” It was definitely a confidence builder.
When I got home and looked at the images ... well, I couldn’t stop looking at them. I loved how they came out. They gave me a little ego boost. It was sorely needed, as I’ve gained about 30 pounds and, like a lot of you, would rather not capture that for posterity. But that’s not what I saw. I saw a connection with the camera, and a sparkle in my eye. The weight didn’t even matter (I wore all black, however, which is key btw)! I kind of discovered myself again. I do still need to lose some weight, but that’s not what a portrait session is all about. It’s about seeing your BEST SELF ... just as you are, right now. See that sparkle in your eye. Exist and love yourself ... now.
Don’t 'weight'. Have a professional photoshoot and connect with yourself again. It’s worth it!
